It can sometimes be better to leave certain stories alone, and that seems to apply to the Predator series. The first film rightfully earned its place as a classic among fans. Subsequent installments vary considerably in quality, from barely acceptable to downright terrible attempts to exploit what’s already been done. Prey isn't one of the bad ones. It features striking visuals and creates a seemingly authentic setting rooted in the 18th century—a world transitioning toward modernity while its native people cling to their traditions. However, that’s about as far as it goes. The story then veers into something contrived, failing to accurately portray life during that historical period. Instead, feminist themes are introduced, which feels out of place, like discovering a wristwatch in an Egyptian burial site. Even if you can somehow ignore this jarring plot development, the film doesn’t improve. The protagonist, a young and slight girl, manages to overcome and defeat a ferocious alien hunter. This is a hunter who, as we remember from the original movie, decimated all but one member of a highly trained team of special forces soldiers. It's true that Schwarzenegger’s character ultimately used basic strategies to defeat the Predator. Nevertheless, he was a large, powerfully built man with extensive combat training and still barely survived. Despite this, the story presents a young woman challenging traditional male dominance who can somehow manage to succeed—even when she has to flee from a bear that the Predator easily kills. Is further explanation necessary? If you’re comfortable ignoring logic, it might be entertaining. My recommendation is to watch or revisit the original film and simply accept that the sequels happened. 4/10
