The newest installment in the Predator movie sequence has arrived, marking the first release under Disney’s ownership following their acquisition of 20th Century Fox. “Prey” looks to the past as a way to develop the franchise and achieves this by transporting events to a Comanche community roughly three hundred years ago. The story centers on a young woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder), who aspires to become a warrior, but faces challenges in a society dominated by men. Only her brother is somewhat encouraging of her goals, mentioning the trial she will need to complete to prove herself. Simultaneously, a Predator arrives and begins hunting local animals. Naru notices signs of this activity and attempts to persuade her tribe that the destruction they are discovering isn’t caused by a bear or mountain lion, as the community assumes. When the true nature of the danger becomes clear, Naru must find the strength and abilities needed to track down and confront the threat endangering her people. Director Dan Trachtenberg combines action with an intriguing setting and characters, resulting in a compelling story. While some visual effects occasionally fall short of expectations, the Predator sequences are full of action and suspense, which should please fans of the series. The film does ask viewers to accept certain things at face value, but ultimately “Prey” proves to be a worthwhile experience that surpasses "The Predator" and ranks among the better films in the franchise, suggesting a promising future for the series. It will be fascinating to see what direction the franchise takes next, as there’s ample opportunity for further stories, but presently, “Prey” offers a revitalizing approach that fans are likely to appreciate. 4 stars out of 5
