The reason for the single-star rating comes down to its dullness. It handles New Orleans’ red-light district similarly to how *Reds* portrayed John Reed—it drained the story of any thrill while trying to be artistic. While the performances are good, the movie lacks a compelling plot, engaging narrative, and overall entertainment value. Like *Reds*, it's one of those films people feel obligated to see because it’s still discussed decades later, even 41 years on. However, I can understand why crafting an exciting film about someone who takes photographs is challenging. E. J. Bellocq wasn’t exactly Robert Capa.
