This experience has shown me how reality can sometimes exceed anything made up. Coming from Australia, Predestination is directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, who also composed the score. The Spierigs adapted the screenplay from Robert A. Heinlein's story "All You Zombies." It features Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, Noah Taylor, Christopher Kirby, and Madeleine West. Ben Nott was the cinematographer. A basic summary would describe it as a time-traveling agent’s mission to prevent a killer—referred to as “The Fizzle Bomber”—while simultaneously assisting a transgender man who shares an affecting story with him. However, "simple" isn't really a word that applies to this movie, which is a wildly intricate creation from the Spierigs. The initial portion of the film consists of Snook’s character telling Hawke her story, and then the narrative descends into a labyrinth of time loops and perplexing contradictions. This requires total focus from the audience; it's a work that will definitely prompt difficult questions, and probably lead you to go back and rewatch certain parts for understanding—which is what I ended up doing! It’s not an action movie; instead, it has a thoughtful and calm feel, being mature science fiction that’s both bold and intelligent. Snook delivers an absolutely superb performance; the many facets of her characters are captivating and emotionally resonant. Hawke is reliably excellent as well—he understands the appropriate tone for this film without needing to exaggerate his acting, recognizing that his co-star should be in the spotlight. The story combines its complex ideas about time and how it affects people with explorations of fundamental human issues like identity. It’s a very fulfilling experience if you can give it your undivided attention, and I hope it gains more appreciation over time as a noteworthy science fiction film. 8/10
