A collection of familiar action archetypes—a mercenary with specialized skills, a Russian soldier, a cartel enforcer, members of the Yakuza, assassins, and various other violent individuals—each get a chance to showcase their abilities before being eliminated, all within an environment meant to recall the atmosphere of the 1987 film’s jungle setting. It's just okay. I wasn’t completely convinced that Adrian Brody works as the central action hero either. He might be among the least convincing tough guys since Danny Glover in Predator 2. There was another issue with it, too—a minor point, but still frustrating. SPOILERS AHEAD: Consider the trailer for Predators; at approximately one minute and twenty-three seconds there’s a shot that I thought was particularly striking: Brody's character is shown with one of those distinctive laser sights (the kind mounted on the creatures’ weapons) aimed directly at him. The sight moves up his body, focusing on his head, and as it does, numerous other sights appear all around him—more than a dozen, seemingly fifteen in total. It creates suspense: how will he escape this situation? He's clearly in trouble. However, that scene doesn’t actually occur in the movie. There is a laser sight, certainly, from one of the three predators pursuing them, but not fifteen. Those additional sights were added solely for the trailer to give the impression that the film features more Predators than it really does. It's one thing to assemble highlights from a movie into a trailer to make it seem more thrilling than the actual two-hour experience might be, but it’s another matter entirely to mislead viewers about what they can anticipate seeing onscreen.
