The movie unfolds deliberately at first, but after that initial period, it ranks among the most thrilling chase stories I’ve encountered. Carl Weathers' character, Dillon, persuades Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch to participate in a risky operation to save someone from within a dense jungle. Upon arrival, they discover they are being hunted by an adversary—an entity with extraordinary ninja-like abilities—and things quickly turn deadly. As the team is systematically eliminated, it escalates into a desperate fight for their lives. This is my preferred work of John McTiernan’s. He makes excellent use of the confining setting; the heat-sensitive camera technique works well, and the growing feeling of dread as these experienced soldiers come to understand they are in over their heads is captivating. The tension steadily increases toward a resolution that even possesses a certain code of conduct. It's not going to receive any prestigious writing awards, nor does the cast provide exceptionally subtle or refined portrayals. It’s simply an action-adventure film with elements of horror, some mature/dark humor, and I found it quite entertaining.
