This Vietnam-era story, told with the style of John McTiernan, really hits hard. I want to begin by sharing my ratings—plural because, as a fan of science fiction and action films, I can’t think of many others that compare. It's pure suspense, explosive fun, and alongside McTiernan’s other classic, *Die Hard*, it has stood the test of time so well that it will continue to excite audiences for generations to come. My personal rating is a perfect 10/10; it’s flawless in terms of what I look for in this kind of film, something I often get completely absorbed in. For someone who appreciates action films but isn't necessarily a huge fan, I would still give it a solid 7 or 8 out of 10—what’s not to enjoy? There’s no question that the movie is another allegory for Vietnam; a specialized group of soldiers finds themselves trapped in a Central American jungle, being picked off by an unseen foe. They're there because they were deceived by those in power, and strategy is key, but the enemy hunting them has all the advantages. This elite rescue team is packed with muscle—Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Sonny Landham, Bill Duke & Jesse Ventura—and their combined size could have easily sunk the Titanic; McTiernan makes full use of these imposing figures in a series of intense and brutal action sequences. The dialogue is clever and humorous, with Schwarzenegger delivering quips throughout the first part of the film, while Alan Silvestri’s score amps up the excitement at just the right moments. The special effects team did an excellent job bringing this "hardest man in the world versus a formidable alien predator" to life—especially when you see the point-of-view infrared shots from the deadly alien hunter. The ending raises some interesting questions that have, for good or bad, been explored further in other films featuring the Predator; however, it’s best judged as its own entry because it stands out as one of the very best and sets a high standard for the genre—at least in my opinion.
