This film is genuinely hard to experience. The story focuses on three teenage girls existing within Mexico’s poppy fields. Ana (Maria Membreño), Paula (Alejandro Camacho), and Maria (Giselle Barrera Sánchez) attempt to maintain some semblance of normalcy, but the departure of their schoolteacher—due to a refusal to pay protection money to drug dealers—provides an early signal about the environment they inhabit. It’s this teacher who brings up the matter of a missing girl, which reveals that these young women face a grim fate as they mature, and people remain silent about it. The narrative moves back and forth between their present lives and earlier childhood experiences, showing that any possibility of change requires them to leave, although they are reluctant to do so without their mothers or each other—the fathers are absent from the story entirely. Mayra Batalla’s portrayal of “Rita” powerfully demonstrates motherhood; a woman who reacts to her daughter's first period with fear that the girl herself doesn’t yet understand. The film is visually striking, emphasizing its harsh and unrelenting nature. There are efforts at official involvement—military personnel stationed locally and helicopters spraying chemicals on the crops—but director Tatiana Huezo highlights a disheartening cycle of danger and inescapable circumstances, making it hard to imagine an escape. The three young actresses deliver compelling performances, offering emotional and affecting character portrayals. They aren’t willing to simply accept their situation, but things are more complicated than that. It's deeply upsetting, yet the writing and presentation suggest a desire for hope for these girls and to draw attention to the reality that as long as Western countries continue purchasing illegal drugs, these communities will remain trapped in a form of modern-day servitude that is disturbing.
