After a fairly standard family tragedy, sisters "Sally" (Sandra Bullock) and "Gillian" (Nicole Kidman) end up living with their two unusual aunts. These women, who appear to be perpetually young, are thought by many in the area to be witches, but neither "Frances" (Stockard Channing) nor "Jet" (Dianne Wiest) seem overly concerned about it. As the girls mature, they discover some family secrets and learn of a curse that suggests any man who falls for a woman from their lineage is destined for trouble. “Gillian” decides to take inspiration from Lucrezia Borgia when it comes to her relationships, while her sister finds herself falling for a local merchant. When he meets an unfortunate end, it seems like maybe "Gillian" was correct—until she becomes involved with the mysterious tough guy "Jimmy" (Goran Visnjic), and they suddenly find themselves attempting magic that they’re completely unprepared for. Meanwhile, the handsome detective "Hallet" (Aiden Quinn) arrives in town investigating what happened to “Jimmy,” and suspicion falls on the sisters, forcing them to come up with a plan if they want to avoid prison and control the spirit of a recently deceased man who's clearly enjoying himself. Will they manage that without their aunts’ assistance? I suspect not. The film does have some good parts, mostly toward the end, but it felt like it took too long introducing the characters and setting up what was going to happen, and didn’t devote enough time to scenes involving witchcraft. Wiest and Channing (who resembled Liz Taylor to me) aren't on screen nearly as much as they should be, and while Kidman and Bullock do have a good rapport later in the film, they don’t share enough screen time together when things are really moving. It’s an enjoyable movie with some fun and a touch of spookiness, but it struggles to determine whether it's a fantasy or a romance, and I felt it leaned too heavily toward the latter.
