Reno on Power Rangers

4/10 · Oct 22, 2017

This movie felt doomed from the start, and honestly, I’ve given the revamped 'Fantastic Four' a higher mark. While I don’t typically enjoy ‘Power Rangers,’ I was hoping for something passable—certainly not this disappointing. The biggest problem lies with the narrative; it follows the same tired formula seen in countless superhero movies, which is incredibly dull. Even the original series suffered from this, but the script really needed a complete overhaul. It's like they updated the costumes to metal armor, but left the story stuck in the past. The cast shouldn’t be faulted—the younger actors did what they could with the material. The direction wasn’t terrible either. Visually, though, there’s nothing particularly striking or innovative. If you have any experience with animation, it's easy to spot flaws in the CGI work. The antagonist felt underdeveloped and the whole film played out as a sort of prologue. Everything seemed held back until the final act, culminating in a fairly standard confrontation between heroes and villains. It might appeal to younger viewers. Those who already enjoy Marvel and DC superhero films will likely dismiss it as junk. What little value it has is that it’s at least watchable, despite its predictability. I don't see the need for a sequel, but one almost certainly will happen. Its success or failure will determine the future of this franchise, which seems unlikely to compete with established superhero franchises already boasting large fan bases. The filmmakers might succeed if they focus on attracting children; even then, older audiences may just passively watch without complaint. _4/10_
