The new "Power Rangers" movie is noisy, over-the-top, sugary, and strange—and it’s a film that genuinely understands what it's like to be an energetic and easily pleased 12-year-old. The story involves teenagers, but really, it’s more of a wish fulfillment fantasy in the style of Disney Channel, showing what kids imagine awaits them when they become full-blown teens with freedom. These characters are outsiders who come together during detention, creating something like “The Breakfast Club” meets "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers." As expected, there's a combination of silly moments, sincere conversations, and large-scale fight scenes interspersed with the monster action.
