Rick (played by Paul Rudd) portrays a wedding singer in Dublin who’s feeling unfulfilled; he shares his home with his wife and daughter while longing for the career breakthrough he once believed was within reach. They secure a performance at an upscale hotel where they're unexpectedly required to perform alongside Danny, a former boy band member portrayed by Nick Jonas, who is also a friend of theirs. It’s revealed that Danny isn’t a terrible singer, and later that same evening, Rick finds himself enjoying whisky and an impromptu musical session with his more successful acquaintance. This leads to Rick leaving with a prized Gibson guitar, seemingly concluding the matter. However, several months pass when he hears a familiar song in a shopping center; it's a tune he composed years ago and shared with Danny, who has now transformed it into an international sensation. It seems likely that he should receive royalties at this point. The calculating and self-serving Mac (Jack Reynor) handles Danny’s career and is unwilling to consider the Irishman’s request, so the only apparent option is to travel to Los Angeles and directly confront Danny in his hot tub! I noticed whether Jonas was mouthing along to a Stevie Wonder performance at the beginning. Regardless, I felt that Rudd had the stronger vocal presence as Rick battled for deserved recognition (and money), while Jonas appeared comfortable simply providing visual appeal with minimal contribution beyond that. Those with attentive hearing might recognize a snippet of "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson, but otherwise, I considered this to be rather unremarkable and missed an opportunity to explore themes of musical appropriation and lyrical theft more thoroughly, instead focusing on what felt like a superficial and melodramatic storyline. It’s adequately entertaining, though it’s unlikely to leave any lasting impression.
