Horror westerns aren’t exactly common, yet this film from Michael Butts and a largely unfamiliar group of performers attempts to combine those genres. The merging doesn’t entirely work, truthfully, but the movie has decent production values and a certain roughness that complements the energetic, sometimes brutal, storyline. This centers on "Sully" (Isaiah Stratton), who after the Civil War is attempting to establish a life in Texas with his wife and daughter. However, things aren't straightforward; he’s also trying to reassure his child that there are no creatures lurking beneath her bed, while simultaneously we’re shown flashbacks to a discovery he and his coworkers made involving Aztec gold—which might have its own curse attached! The movie pulls together various themes, but the direction often seems unsure of itself. The performances and script are adequate, nothing special, though I found myself appreciating it more on a second viewing than I did initially. It’s obvious that this was created with a modest budget, which restricts what the director wanted to achieve—he clearly had grander ideas than could be realized—but it's far from terrible. It simply feels somewhat disorganized and features an ensemble cast who are still developing their skills.
