Among the limited number of strong entries in the horror landscape this past year, Brandon Cronenberg’s intriguing premise immediately stands out. Featuring outstanding portrayals by Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott (as Colin Tate), Possessor proved to be one of the most disturbing films released in 2020. The film is saturated with graphic violence and brutal killings, and Cronenberg uses unsettling visuals that will likely cause some viewers to abandon it altogether. The deliberate pacing contributes to a consistently tense mood, resulting in some of the most gripping moments I’ve encountered recently. Although the story has fascinating elements and surprising turns, Possessor doesn't maintain its initial energy for the duration. While the unusual imagery enhances the storytelling, it eventually becomes overly distracting and feels superfluous. The final section also felt fairly foreseeable, which was a letdown compared to the more unexpected events in the beginning. Even with those issues, it remains one of my top horror picks this year.
