It’s frustrating to see how often mainstream reviewers miss the point when it comes to horror, praising films that try too hard to be artistic while overlooking what genuine horror enthusiasts appreciate. "Possessor" stands out as an unusual case where critics (scoring 72 on Metacritic) and regular viewers (with a 7.6 Metacritic score) share the opinion that it’s genuinely impressive. The performances are outstanding. Andrea Riseborough, who previously starred in "Mandy," is unsettlingly strange once more, portraying a killer who takes over other people's bodies, while Christopher Abbott from "It Comes at Night" plays a character who is both downcast and under someone else's control for the purposes of another killing. Describing this film adequately would require an extensive list of adjectives, so here are just a few: disturbing, violent, bloody, thought-provoking in its visuals, and provocative. Although Brandon Cronenberg seems to share his father David Cronenberg’s fascination with combining technology and horror, he's developing his own unique approach. This is similar to how Joe Hill has carved out his place separate from Stephen King. Ultimately, these are all positives for people who enjoy horror films.
