I wouldn't necessarily believe everything the captain has to say; as someone in architecture, I know these kinds of vessels aren’t built to stay afloat when turned over. Having previously worked on “The Perfect Storm” about six years earlier, Wolfgang Petersen revisits a maritime setting with this reimagining of Paul Gallico’s 1972 novel, "The Poseidon Adventure." The basic storyline involves a cruise ship being overturned by severe weather conditions, and the people who survive attempt to escape from an inverted vessel before it either completely sinks or they are overcome by rushing water. The initial version is considered one of the best examples of the disaster films that became popular in the 1970s, so it arguably didn’t require a remake, but Hollywood frequently remakes older movies for financial gain. As it stands, this isn't a bad film, however, it doesn’t have much character development, the story is simplified and lacks any extra layers, and ultimately, the visual effects (which are quite impressive and received an Academy Award nomination) are what elevate the movie to just above mediocrity. It’s not essential viewing for disaster film enthusiasts, but there's enough thrills and tension to make it a worthwhile diversion. 6/10
