The film depicts a group of high school students in south Florida during 1954 who are preoccupied with sexual encounters while encountering the proprietor of a disreputable nightclub deep within the Everglades, along with his law enforcement brother. "Porky's," released in 1981, holds a significant place in early 1980s movies, yet I find it to be a mixed bag. The film’s excessive and unpleasant sleaziness, combined with predictable jokes centered around sex, feels out of sync with the mid-1950s setting. It's hard to understand why Susan Clark would agree to portray Cherry Forever, a prostitute; similarly, Kim Cattrall is subjected to what’s intended as a humorous but ultimately degrading scene. What’s more, the actors playing the teenagers appear to be in their twenties and thirties, not high school students—it might have been better if the story focused on college-aged characters instead. However, there are redeeming qualities, such as the recreation of 1950s south Florida, the exploration of growing up, a few appealing female characters, and a genuine effort to develop these young people with their own struggles. Regrettably, the film’s explicit nature leaves you feeling uncomfortable. If you're looking for something similar but less jarring, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," which was released five months later, is a considerably better option. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes and was filmed entirely in southeast Florida, including locations like Miami, Miami Beach, North Miami, North Miami Beach, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and North Bay Village.
