It appears to be yet another beautifully crafted Ghibli film centered around a cursed being – in this case, a pig – who pilots a seaplane through the Italian islands of the 1930s while pursuing air pirates. However, as you become immersed, it evolves into an impressively constructed narrative that provides detailed character development, even for its most basic figures. The “pig” demonstrates wisdom, cleverness, and skill as a pilot, often saving those who have been taken captive. He also has a competitor—the attractive American "Donald Curtis"—who is trying to take not just his position but also the affections of the female lead! What follows is an action-packed adventure film with a good amount of what could be called romance and sharp dialogue, all complemented by stunning animation. The plot can seem simple at times, though there's considerable substance if you choose to search for it. We aren’t directly informed about the reason for his curse, and the conclusion doesn’t entirely resolve things either—though it does arrive after a rather enjoyable showdown between the two pilots. Much of what you gain from this film will depend on your attention to detail; there are numerous subtleties that likely become more apparent and/or significant with repeated viewings. While "Howl's Moving Castle," released much later in 2004, remains my top pick from this studio, this one comes very close and is definitely worth seeing—ideally on a large screen to appreciate the energy and vibrancy of this exceptional animated film.
