This was not a good experience. To put it plainly, I didn’t find 'Popeye' enjoyable at all, even with Robin Williams in the cast. He does an okay job as Popeye, but the film’s inconsistent and odd style really bothered me. I understand what they were trying to do, but it just doesn’t work for me. It felt very ordinary. The other characters surrounding Popeye are irritating, and the musical numbers are incredibly forgettable and don't seem to belong. I went in with high hopes, having heard positive things about the character himself (not specifically this movie) and knowing that Mr. Williams was involved. Compared to his movies that I’ve seen, it’s more like 'Hook' than 'Bicentennial Man', which is a disappointment. I expect some people will disagree with my assessment of the film, as well as my comparison to those other films, and that’s perfectly alright. Personally, I was just eager for it to be over.
