A mother of a teenage girl inherits the house once belonging to an isolated young man known as Popeye. She and her friends plan to fix up the property, intending to turn it into a haunted attraction. However, when thick fog arrives, so does Popeye. “Popeye’s Revenge” (2025) was the initial offering of three inexpensive horror films capitalizing on the character's entry into the public domain; the other two are scheduled for release within 5 to 7 weeks, specifically “Popeye the Slayer Man” and “Shiver Me Timbers.” The production company behind this one is also responsible for recent movies in the Poohverse, including "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" and its sequel. Although it features a different director and writing team, the film shares similarities with other projects and feels formulaic. For example, it begins with illustrated storytelling to establish the backstory, and later includes a hot tub scene where one of the actresses is killed off. Despite this, Popeye’s presence as the villain makes for an enjoyable experience, and thankfully there's no apparent attempt at social commentary. The filmmaking quality is impressive considering the low budget, and the relatively unknown cast delivers solid performances. The beautiful mountain scenery also contributes positively to the film. Among the female actors, Atlanta Moreno, playing Sky, is particularly memorable, alongside Eva Ray as Cherry and Danielle Ronald as Donna. There are a few others, such as Karolina Ugrenyuk portraying Kathy, who comes across as somewhat snobbish. I didn’t find the plot as engaging as other low-budget cabin-in-the-woods horror movies like "Lurking Woods," "The Lake on Clinton Road" and "Crazy Lake"—all released roughly ten years ago. Still, if you're looking for a cabin-in-the-woods horror film, this one will do the job adequately. I haven’t had an opportunity to see the other two Popeye films yet, so I can’t offer a comparison. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 19 minutes and was filmed in England and Scotland; specific locations weren't readily available. GRADE: B-/C+
