I recently saw this film and I can't quite put into words the feeling it left me with – though, as someone who likes to dissect things, I do have some thoughts about it: a strangely coherent jumble. I really appreciate the director’s perspective on feminism—that’s essentially what the story is about. It follows a young woman's journey toward knowledge. We see her explore and experiment, and there are many artistic choices that illustrate Bella’s development; things like her hair growing longer, changes in how she walks, and the way color is used all seem deliberate. In my view, Max embodies what a good person looks like. He believes women should be able to do whatever they want and doesn't try to hold her back. Eventually, she ends up with him—sort of. It’s odd, isn’t it? The men who mistreated her, such as Duncan, who warned her against falling for him, became the most upset when he couldn’t accept Bella’s decisions; he couldn't cope with her choice to become a prostitute. It took me a while to grasp why she made those choices, but it ultimately seemed like she was driven by curiosity or a desire to change things. I thought it was handled well how prostitution is portrayed as a way for women to escape difficult circumstances. The sound design really stood out too; the music was exceptionally good and I have no complaints about it. It always felt appropriate for the scene and intensified her emotions. The cinematography was also quite impressive. I particularly liked the zooms—they were captivating because film school teaches you not to use them, but the director clearly had a reason for including them. This movie challenges conventional filmmaking techniques, often without you even noticing it, and that’s what makes it so special. It disregards established rules just as Bella defies societal norms. It might appear explicit and disorganized, but that's really the point of the film. If you look closely enough, you’ll find answers to your questions—it doesn’t hand everything to you. I would give it a perfect score: 10 out of 10.
