The fact that this film didn't receive an NC-17 rating is more impressive than anything else, even Emma Stone winning two Oscars. We see a woman jump from a bridge and die. Afterward, our eccentric scientist brings her body home, consults a guide to human anatomy, and begins his work. Following his success, the brain of the deceased woman’s baby starts developing inside her mother's body. The scientist then asks a student over for dinner so he can introduce them to Bella Baxter. It doesn't take long before the student realizes what’s unusual about Bella. When they question their teacher, an arranged marriage is decided upon. However, Bella has different plans. She appears to be 35 years old but possesses the mind of a 16-year-old and runs away with her father’s lawyer, setting out to experience life firsthand. This includes food, sex, food, sex, sex, sex, dancing, sex, politics, and sex. After a cruise and a disagreement on a chilly Parisian morning, she finds work in a brothel. Alongside the constant sexual encounters, she gains maturity in many areas of her life. Despite some moral objections, the story is surprisingly well-organized, which disproves any concerns about it being chaotic. There’s nothing in this film that should surprise anyone familiar with the director's previous work. I honestly wasn’t convinced that was supposed to be 19th Century Lisbon; when Stone appeared, I didn't pay much attention to the backgrounds. Also, the movie would have been better with a scene featuring a large flock of geese.
