Yorgos Lanthimos, who previously directed films like *The Killing of the Sacred Deer*, *The Lobster*, and *The Favourite*, teamed up with writer Tony McNamara (*The Great*, *Cruella*) to adapt Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, a book that Lanthimos was so fond of he traveled to Scotland in 2009 specifically to secure the film rights. The movie has a Victorian setting blended with steampunk elements and an overall beautiful aesthetic, and it follows the story of Bella Baxter, a woman brought back to life by the unusual surgeon Godwin Baxter. After attempting suicide and discovering she’s pregnant, he uses the fetus's brain for her reanimation. Following this event, she embarks on a journey that mirrors Frankenstein’s monster as she gradually develops her tastes and abilities throughout the film. I have to say that some of the sexual scenes featuring Emma Stone and her character’s exploration of sexuality are quite bold and demonstrate her growth as an actress in every way. The main cast includes Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Godwin Baxter, and Ramy Youssef as Max McCandles in a smaller role. According to the cinematographer, Ryan Williams (*American Honey*, *The Favourite*), Lanthimos employed a wide range of cameras, lenses, and film stock—including Nikon, Angenieux Optimo, and Zeiss Master Zooms—along with an ultra-wide PL-mount Optex 4mm fisheye lens, designed for 16mm/S16mm cinematography with an aperture of T2. Antique 58mm and 85mm Petzval lenses were also used. Ryan Williams chose EASTMAN DOUBLE-X Black & White Negative Film 5222 for the movie's opening black-and-white sequences, KODAK EKTACHROME Color Reversal Film 100D 5294 for Bella’s elopement and adventures with Wedderburn, and KODAK VISION3 500T Color Negative Film 5219 for the film's conclusion. The production design by Shona Heath and James Price, along with the art direction and prosthetics teams, did an incredible job, as did Holly Waddington’s costume designs (who previously worked on *Lady Macbeth* and *Clash of Titans*). The costumes range from peculiar, childlike dresses at the beginning to more mature styles later in the film. All this was accomplished on a budget of $35 million. The movie has received 11 Academy Award nominations—including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role—and 11 BAFTA awards, plus two Venice Film Festival awards: Golden Lion Best Film and Yorgos Lanthimos’s 2023 UNIMED Award. I really hope the film does well and that it outshines other contenders at the Academy Awards (though there's no nomination for best supporting actress in this one).
