The experience of "Smellyvision" was something else, didn’t it? Equipped with a card containing ten distinct scents hidden beneath silver foil, I went to see what the "Fishpaw" family were up to. Divine is excellent playing “Francine,” the long-suffering wife of womanizer “Elmer” (David Sampson) and mother to “Lulu” (Mary Garlington) and her rebellious brother “Dexter” (Ken King). Her comfortable suburban existence begins to unravel when Elmer’s soft-porn cinema draws unwanted attention; Lulu finds herself pregnant thanks to a local tough, and Dexter has a peculiar foot fetish involving stamping on any feet that happen to cross his path. Things are escalating wonderfully for her until the handsome and appealing "Todd" (Tab Hunter) presents her with an enticing chance to escape her family’s troubles. It's genuinely enjoyable – the characters aren't particularly complex, more like shallow water, but director John Waters maintains a rapid tempo, delivering constant chaos and amusement that is diverting, though sometimes rather juvenile and straightforward. It works well as a send-up of several more substantial American comedy films from the late 1970s. The film is brief, pleasant, and worth watching if you have ninety minutes to spare, and it even includes on-screen prompts telling you when to scratch and sniff!
