The promotional material for this film seems to come from someone at 20th Century Fox who clearly hasn’t seen the original movie. Describing the filmmakers as “legendary” is ridiculous; they haven't created anything particularly good, and this film doesn't change that. It's hard to believe anyone working at 20th Century Fox would make such a blatant misrepresentation. I hope audiences aren’t gullible enough to buy into it, and the middling scores on review sites suggest they weren’t. As for the movie itself, it’s a pale imitation of the original—a cheap knockoff. It lacks all the appeal of the earlier film, and most importantly, none of the characters have anything like the charisma of their counterparts. The father comes across as completely foolish and irresponsible. The mother is just another generic Hollywood housewife type. Just when you think something might actually happen, when the ghost hunter appears, it fizzles out again. He’s simply uninteresting; he's not tough or mysterious—nothing to make him worth watching. There are so many problems with the story too. How could this guy possibly afford a house when he doesn't seem to have any income? And then he finds another place at the end, after his first one is apparently destroyed. How clueless is the screenwriter? In the original film, it was presented as a new neighborhood, which explained the issues. This version doesn’t offer that explanation, which raises the same question again: what were they thinking? The CGI effects are passable, but that's true of much of what comes out of Hollywood these days—with the exception of SyFy movies, naturally. I’d say it would be an above-average TV movie, but as a remake of a classic, it completely misses the mark. I'm glad I watched it at home and didn't waste money seeing it in a theater.
