I entered this viewing with significant doubts about whether it needed to exist in the first place. Surprisingly, it wasn’t quite as dreadful as I'd braced myself for; earlier criticism led me to believe I should steer clear. The visual effects were impressive, and the performances of Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, and Jane Adams—it was a pleasure to see her again following her memorable role in 'Happiness'!—really helped carry the movie. I had some idea of what to expect given my mixed feelings about director Gil Kenan’s animated film 'Monster House', but I was curious to see how his dynamic directing style would work with live actors. I feel it could have benefited from more suspense and scares, although I'm not certain that was the goal. It seemed like they were aiming for a family-friendly adventure with some excitement, frights, and humor—similar to what the 'Ghostbusters' remake attempted. If so, then on those terms, it succeeded reasonably well. I’d like to watch it again sometime with my son Julian, who is thirteen years old and enjoys horror films, just as I did with the original. If I were to create an ideal version of 'Poltergeist', I would have used the same script written by Steven Spielberg and simply upgraded the special effects; that seems like a more promising direction to me.
