A typical family—a mother, father, and three children—is living an ordinary life in their house beside a cemetery when strange occurrences begin. Objects around the home start moving seemingly on their own; doors open and close, chairs slide about, and lights flicker with a will of their own. At first, the Freeling family views these events as amusing quirks, but things take a dark turn when their daughter Carol Anne (played by Heather O'Rourke) vanishes. When paranormal experts find she’s trapped in another realm, reachable only through static on a television screen, a desperate fight begins to rescue her from sinister forces holding her captive. Zelda Rubinstein is memorable as the psychic Tangina, and Tobe Hooper skillfully employs her character—along with the young actress—and some unsettling lighting effects to build suspense throughout the two-hour film, keeping viewers captivated. It wasn’t necessarily because I was eager for the child's return—I share a sentiment with Ian Fleming on that subject; but rather due to fear these malevolent entities could potentially threaten all of humankind. A genuinely frightening experience!
