I have a real fondness for this film. I’ll admit, considering what we expect now, the special effects aren't quite up to snuff—though having seen the updated version, it's clear that newer isn’t necessarily better. This is precisely what appeals to me in a horror film and seems appropriate for older children too. While I do enjoy more mature horror films, I prefer PG-13 because movies like this one tend to prioritize narrative and character development. The sense of dread within the family and all the feelings explored felt very real to me. Even now, I don’t think the performances are exaggerated in any way. A lot of what audiences recognize as standard elements originated here, at least for my generation. The film's music and the iconic line "They're Here" will forever be significant parts of our culture, just like the shower scene from “Psycho.”
