It's been four decades since Mary Pickford starred in an adaptation of Eleanor H. Porter's children’s book and stage play, Pollyanna, when Walt Disney decided to create his own film version. Those who aren’t particularly interested in early cinema might discover that this later telling is more enjoyable. Hayley Mills gives a wonderful performance as the relentlessly positive girl who encourages an entire community to participate in her “Glad Game,” managing to be both charming and endearing. I appreciated the comedic elements and how quickly the story unfolded, since nearly everything from the original hour-long silent film was included. Disney films consistently assemble excellent supporting actors, and this one is no exception. Mary Grace Canfield as Angelica and Agnes Moorehead as Mrs. Snow were standouts for me. The moments depicting Mrs. Snow’s changing perspective felt well-developed and genuinely touching. I noticed that the movie concluded in a sentimental way, which is typical, but it didn't offer quite the neat resolution often seen in Disney films, or even in the Masterpiece Theater adaptation that aired forty years later.
