Police Academy really doesn’t deliver much excitement. It just didn't strike me as funny, although I generally understand why certain films might appeal to some viewers—that isn’t the case here. Considering this is a well-known series, I suppose people like these kinds of movies, so I am somewhat taken aback. To my mind, it comes across as a fairly weak attempt. The characters seem to have one defining characteristic each (like the tall guy, the quiet woman, the person wanting to be a war hero, etc.), and that trait is just repeated again and again throughout the film; it doesn't become any more entertaining because of it. How many times do they use the theme song, by the way? It’s admittedly catchy, but still. Michael Winslow is honestly the only good thing about this movie. I hadn’t heard of him before now, but those vocal sound effects are incredibly impressive; I even wondered if they were added in place of sound effects. He's got amazing talent! Donovan Scott is probably the 'best' among the rest of the cast (?). I personally found Steve Guttenberg to be more irritating than anything else, which is a shame since Bruce Willis was up for the part—apparently he auditioned. Kim Cattrall doesn’t get much to do either; it was interesting to spot G. W. Bailey, her co-star in Mannequin, appearing here, and he's alright. Despite all its shortcomings, when the credits started playing I didn’t feel particularly upset or anything negative toward the film. It just felt underwhelming and poorly made; I was hoping for quicker, more clever humor. And seriously, how did they make seven of these movies?! I'm curious to see what it involves...
