I’m certain this movie started what became an important comic series from the eighties and nineties. I recall that, until the early 2000s, movies from this series were frequently shown on television, and they still pop up regularly on cable channels. Unlike a lot of other films from that time, it seems to me that these hold up well and haven’t become dated. The writing was really helpful because it was quite good, especially considering the film is lighthearted and doesn't have much depth: after a local government decision to allow anyone to enroll in police training courses regardless of their physical or mental abilities, the Police Academy was flooded with very unqualified applicants. Now there’s an attempt to get them to quit, and one person is being blocked from doing so, even though they want to leave. If someone told me that the film's script is fairly basic and not particularly brilliant, I would probably agree. Nevertheless, it worked perfectly for what it was trying to achieve and supported the jokes throughout the movie. Many of them are foreseeable, some are overly suggestive, but many of the gags land pretty well. There’s some female nudity present, though nothing that contemporary films haven't displayed in far more excessive ways. Still, parents should be aware. There are several talented actors who do a great job here. Despite being quite old now, it represents a high point in Steve Guttenberg’s career, as he was excellent in the series playing the mischievous Mahoney. He really took advantage of his role and benefited from that dedication. G.W. Bailey also deserves praise for an inspired, funny, and well-executed performance. Even though he doesn't have many lines, Bubba Smith is memorable, using his size and serious demeanor to good effect. The actor was excellent. Similarly, David Graf is genuinely amusing and grabs your attention whenever he’s on screen. Like Graf, Marion Ramsey also had a career highlight in these films, and she made the most of it with an exceptionally strong performance. Michael Winslow and George Gaynes were also very good. Kim Catrall is attractive, but she doesn't have much to do, like some of the other actors because the cast is simply enormous! The film was shot in an old mental institution, and the buildings’ beautiful, somewhat institutional look adds to the atmosphere of the academy. The cinematography is standard and doesn't offer anything new or original, but it works well enough, and the soundtrack features one of the most recognizable theme songs in comedy films. The movie moves along at a good pace and isn’t boring.
