Filipe Manuel Neto on Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment

6/10 · Sep 20, 2022

This movie serves as a follow-up to the first one, capitalizing on the success it had at the box office. I’m aware that some people might disagree with me, but in my opinion, it held its own against the original fairly well, contributing to the franchise's growth and popularity—something television later benefited from. The story picks up where the previous film left off, following the newly-minted police officers as they tackle their first challenging assignment: supporting a struggling police station in a difficult area, led by the brother of the Academy Commander. Naturally, someone is eager to take over that position and will stop at nothing to obstruct their progress. The writing isn't particularly imaginative and still reveals some flaws, but it does what’s necessary to keep the movie moving forward, even if it doesn’t quite measure up to the first film in that regard. A plus: all of the nudity from the original has been removed, which makes this one more appropriate for families. The cast is largely the same as in the earlier film, with familiar and dependable performers carrying most of the weight. Steve Guttenberg once again delivers a memorable performance. Art Metrano consistently manages to grab your attention whenever he's on screen; he’s genuinely funny and skilled at his role. David Graf, Bubba Smith, Lance Kinsey, and especially Bob Goldthwait are all actors who deserve recognition for their solid work. I was particularly impressed by Goldthwait and the sense of unpredictable craziness he brought to his character. Marion Ramsey has a smaller part in this one, but she does her best with what’s available to her. The film features decent sets and costumes, and the cinematography is standard but effective. The music includes the familiar main theme, though it doesn't offer anything particularly new. The movie maintains a good rhythm and isn't dull.
