John Chard on Point of No Return

6/10 · Aug 26, 2015

John Badham’s Point of No Return, also known as The Assassin, features a script by Robert Getchell and Alexander Seros and an impressive cast including Bridget Fonda, Gabriel Byrne, Dermot Mulroney, Anne Bancroft, and Harvey Keitel. Hans Zimmer composed the music, while Michael Ferris and Michael Watkins handled the cinematography (Panavision/Technicolor). The story centers on Maggie Hayward (Fonda), a drug addict who unexpectedly finds herself facing capital punishment after killing a police officer. A possible alternative arises: an opportunity to work for the government? It’s hard to take this too seriously. Being a remake of Luc Besson's Nikita, it was inevitably going to face questions about its purpose and necessity. Point of No Return is a solid action film; it possesses undeniable style, striking visuals, and appealing performers. The action sequences are skillfully executed and exciting—with a Hong Kong influence—and the writing incorporates ideas concerning identity, parental absence, and a somewhat unusual oedipal dynamic. The Nina Simone soundtrack is excellent, and Zimmer’s score complements her songs with confidence that holds your attention. It doesn't break any new ground, and while it has been mentioned in some neo-noir discussions, it barely qualifies as part of that genre. However, if you enjoy fast-paced action and appreciate intense violence, then seeing Bridget and her weapons is certainly worth a viewing. It earns a 6/10.
