This movie presents a softened version of the story of British settlers coming to Virginia during the 1600s. Their initial goal was finding gold, but they quickly encountered the native people and proceeded to try and destroy or enslave them. Pocahontas shows interest in meeting these newcomers, as does Captain John Smith, both hoping to avoid violence and foster communication and mutual respect. It seems initially like a simple animated romance, but anyone expecting a historically precise portrayal should seek another source; this film serves primarily as a showcase for decent animation that briefly explores Native American customs and spirituality ("The Willow Tree," featuring Linda Hunt’s voice acting, stands out as particularly moving), along with the Oscar-winning songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, which are admittedly overly sentimental. It's agreeable enough to watch, but ultimately not very memorable.
