My wife lost interest in this film about fifteen minutes in, and I could see why she felt that way. The character Alice and her relationship with Ben didn’t immediately grab me either, but I saw enough potential to continue watching. And I'm happy I did. As the two main characters developed a connection, I began to enjoy their humor and teasing back-and-forth. There were still some awkward scenes here and there, and the wedding sequences weren't as humorous as they could have been—I’m a novelist myself, and I thought maybe I could have written those parts better—but on the whole, I felt that the latter portion of the movie pulled things around. I was wondering if it would conclude with a big romantic gesture, which is pretty standard in this genre to finalize the love story, typically referencing something from earlier on. What actually occurred, though, you’ll need to discover for yourselves as a reward for enduring the less successful parts of what turns out to be a genuinely touching movie. If romantic comedies aren't your thing, this film isn't going to convert you, so it might be best to skip it. But if you can tolerate some lightheartedness, it’s worth checking out.
