It’s an enjoyable film drawing inspiration from stories like “Robin Hood” and “Dick Turpin.” Robert Carlyle portrays a man already involved in criminal activities, while Jonny Lee Miller plays someone struggling to make ends meet—both are dissatisfied with the social order of 18th-century England and begin redistributing wealth by robbing the aristocracy as they travel along isolated country lanes. During one such robbery, they capture the Lord Chief Justice (Sir Michael Gambon) and his daughter, Lady Rebecca (Liv Tyler), and Miller's character develops an attraction to her. However, Ken Stott’s Chance—an enforcer for her father who also desires her attention—complicates matters, threatening their simple existence of theft and drinking. Carlyle's performance doesn't live up to the standard he set in "Trainspotting" (1996), and his work here feels similarly lacking. Miller is quite good, Tyler gives an energetic portrayal, and Alan Cumming provides a few amusing appearances as Lord Rochester among other supporting actors familiar from television. The humor tends toward the crude side, and it doesn’t always land successfully; however, there’s enough energy and momentum to place the film in the realm of average entertainment. The costumes are well-done, the music is unusual—though not consistently period-appropriate—and it's reasonably worth investing 100 minutes in. Still, details will likely fade quickly after viewing.
