Please Stand By (2017) presents a touching story that isn’t without issues, centering on Wendy, a young woman who has autism and loves Star Trek. The storyline holds your interest and encourages you to support her, though certain moments seem contrived or don't quite fit. The filmmakers seemed to emphasize the unpleasantness of other characters, which may have been meant to show things from Wendy’s point of view, but it comes across as hard to believe. The visuals are adequate but unremarkable, generally straightforward and practical. There's a clear effort put into portraying Wendy's routines and her surroundings, however, how her story progresses occasionally feels disjointed. Dakota Fanning gives a dedicated portrayal, yet it appears somewhat rigid, probably because of the direction she received rather than any shortcoming in her own talent. At times, Wendy seems excessively mechanical, lacking some of the emotional range that could have improved the film. The other actors do an acceptable job, but most of their characters aren't fully developed. The writing has its good points, but it might have done better to make the exchanges feel more genuine. The music is a definite strength, bringing in warmth and feeling when the movie itself struggles to achieve those qualities. Please Stand By offers a pleasant viewing experience with a strong lead performance, but shortcomings in how it was brought to life prevent it from being truly great.
