It's the kind of movie that will have you reacting strongly, wanting to yell at what's happening on screen! The story centers around “Nora” (Maya Vanderbeque), who steps in when her older brother “Abel” (Günter Duret) is repeatedly subjected to a bizarre and degrading ritual – having his hair washed in a toilet bowl. However, her attempts to help only end up pushing her away from him, while also significantly impacting their behavior at school and their relationships with friends. It’s a pattern of harmful interactions that really illustrates how trying to do the right thing can backfire. Adults become involved, both parents and teachers, but it's unclear if anything will actually improve. The two young actors give powerful performances; she, in particular, portrays a character full of intense emotion – a girl committed to defending her brother, no matter the consequences for either of them. More generally, the film highlights the damaging effects of bullying and how inadequate systems can be when dealing with people who may not fully understand the impact or reasons behind their actions. I always believe that an apology forced upon someone holds no real value; in those situations, the authorities should simply be involved, but that’s just one possible reaction this film might trigger for viewers, whether they have kids or not. The dialogue feels very realistic, almost as if it were improvised, and it brought to mind “Close” (2022). It's a frustrating movie to watch, so maybe avoid having anything within reach that you could throw at the television.
