If you decide to have an affair, Dave... Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) works late nights as a disc jockey in Carmel, California. While his girlfriend is away, he encounters and sleeps with a listener named Evelyn (Jessica Walter), who also happens to be the mysterious person who previously called into his show requesting Errol Garner's "Play Misty For Me" in a seductive voice. Assuming this encounter was just a single event, Dave grows worried when Evelyn won’t leave him alone; things are quickly spiraling out of control and becoming deeply unsettling for everyone involved. This marked Clint Eastwood’s initial attempt at directing, and it turned out to be quite impressive. He directs himself in the film, ensuring high production values across the board, and managed to finish the movie on schedule and under budget—a notable accomplishment that likely contributed to his later success as a director. *Play Misty For Me* is an exceptionally well-crafted and captivating film; it’s more of an exploration of character than its horror elements might indicate. Eastwood, in an atypical role, portrays Garver with a certain slyness, and the trouble he finds himself in feels almost like a consequence of his own selfish actions and lack of remorse. However, Jessica Walter truly carries the picture; her performance as the increasingly unstable Evelyn is remarkable, blending moments of sadness with outright terror, making her character feel genuine and unsettling enough to create an uncomfortable connection with the audience. It’s unfortunate that Walter didn't achieve greater stardom because she clearly demonstrated significant talent here. Still edgy and darkly interesting, *Play Misty For Me* remains a solid thriller today, and even seeing Clint in his oversized white underwear doesn’t detract from its overall appeal. 8.5/10
