It’s puzzling where Jason Statham ended up; he usually elevates these kinds of movies. Perhaps he was unavailable because they opted for Gerard Butler as Captain "Torrance," who's tasked with flying from Singapore to Tokyo before continuing on to his daughter’s wedding in the United States. The flight isn't full, so pressure is put on him to cut costs and fuel consumption by navigating close to a severe storm—and then he somehow manages to land the large aircraft on a secluded, lawless Filipino island (which conveniently has a rough "mining" road that seems like it belongs around Los Angeles). It turns out one of his passengers was already wanted by the police, so “Brodie” and their former prisoner – and now helpful – companion “Gaspare” (Mike Colter) have to join forces to fight off greedy bandits under the command of their leader "Junmar" (Evan Dane Taylor), all while trying to send a signal for rescue. The story is so unbelievable that you should just abandon any expectation of realism before viewing. The conversations are bland, and the plot progresses from one unlikely and underdeveloped situation to another with remarkable smoothness. However, the final twenty minutes do offer some exciting gunplay, which does somewhat redeem it from the overall mediocrity it likely warrants. The time passed without much trouble, but it’s not a film that will stick in your memory.
