The film “Plane” centers on Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler), a Scottish pilot eager to arrive at his destination so he can be with his daughter for the New Year’s celebrations. Things don't go as planned when severe weather forces an emergency landing. During this attempt, an FBI agent accompanying Louis Gaspare, a dangerous criminal (Mike Colter), loses his phone. In a misguided effort to retrieve it during the descent, he and a flight attendant perish. The survivors face considerable challenges after the crash, but Brodie’s abilities help keep the remaining passengers and crew alive. Instead of receiving gratitude, they mostly grumble and complain while the crew works on restoring communications. The situation worsens when rebel forces who control the island take them hostage, leading to further casualties. Brodie and Louis are the only ones to escape capture after eliminating several rebels. They then team up to eliminate more adversaries in an effort to free the hostages. The movie unfolds as a Die Hard-style action thriller, but set during New Year’s instead of Christmas. “Plane” delivers some suspenseful scenes and hits every recognizable Die Hard element it can. As with Die Hard, a surprisingly high number of rebels die compared to hostages. Looking back, and as Brodie suggested, if I were the rebel leader—or Hans Gruber—I would have simply released all the captives. While I found this film entertaining, it's an action-packed but ultimately familiar experience lasting 1 hour and 47 minutes. New tag line: Survive Together or Die Hard alone.
