I ended up being pleasantly surprised by Plane. Before seeing it, my expectations were pretty low because it seemed like a cheap action movie geared toward dads. However, the performances, set pieces, and intense action sequences helped elevate this film above mediocrity. The plot is very straightforward: a plane suffers damage during a storm and crash lands on a deserted island. This scenario has been explored many times in movies and television shows, but the way it’s handled here is quite impressive. We experience the situation through the pilot's eyes as he and the flight attendants try to figure out how to survive. It felt very realistic, offering a look at crash landing procedures and demonstrating just how durable airplanes can be. The initial thirty-minute sequence kept me completely engaged, even though I could see what was coming. The CGI in this section wasn’t great, though; the plane looked like something from an Xbox 360 game. The movie does rely on some familiar plot devices common to films of this type. One thing I noticed was that most of the "good" characters are white American men and women, while the “bad” people—the island fighters and our main prisoner hero—are people of color. It’s a subtle point, but it bothered me somewhat. Also, the way the Philippines were portrayed as unwilling to help in their own territory was ridiculous. This created an opportunity for the heroic American military personnel to step in and save the day by eliminating some island terrorists. There's a bit of minor military propaganda present, which didn’t ruin my enjoyment but is worth noting. The acting was generally quite good. Gerard Butler played his typical role; I liked his charisma as a pilot, along with the tough and militaristic attitude he brought from previous roles. Mike Colter was excellent as the movie's ultimate badass, killing enemies with whatever he could find. While I didn’t fault his performance, I really disliked how they handled his character's ending in the film; it felt undeserved and out of place. The rest of the cast was adequate. Ultimately, Plane delivers exactly what it sets out to do within a short and focused timeframe, and that's all I could have asked for. Score: 63% Verdict: Decent
