Gerard Butler portrays Brodie Torrance, a recently widowed father anticipating the conclusion of his almost-empty flight from Singapore to Tokyo. His goal is to leverage the time difference and reunite with his daughter in Hawaii for New Year’s celebrations. The film “Plane” deviates from this plan when the nearly vacant flight also carries a prisoner transfer: Louis (Mike Colter), a dangerous fugitive. Under pressure from a corporate representative, the pilots were compelled to fly through a storm they had been assured would have cleared by their arrival time, in order to conserve fuel and save time. This decision leads to serious problems, leaving the aircraft without functioning avionics and necessitating an emergency landing on an island. With no means of contacting assistance and uncertain of their precise location, Brodie discovers they are on a remote Philippine island inhabited solely by insurgents and local militia; conventional law enforcement is unavailable. As Brodie searches for a way to get in touch with help, he involves Louis, and soon learns that the passengers and crew have been taken hostage by a ruthless local armed group. Improvising their own rescue while awaiting outside assistance, they find themselves facing a terrifying ordeal as they struggle to stay alive. The film maintains a high level of suspense, particularly in the initial scenes aboard the plane which effectively established the routine of a pilot’s job and heightened the feeling of dread. As someone who experiences anxiety during turbulent flights, I felt my hands become clammy and worry set in while watching the detailed depictions of the flight encountering danger. The action sequences were captivating, as were the characters, despite their limited backstory or character development; it was easy to root for them. The film delivers consistent action throughout, making “Plane” an enjoyable distraction that fans of Butler will likely appreciate. 4 stars out of 5
