People who have even basic advantages are fortunate compared to those born without any rights or opportunities at all. This movie offers a look into that kind of existence. It’s simple for us to offer advice like “You always have options.” But director Hector Babenco definitively disproves that notion here. The film feels almost like a documentary, and that's precisely what makes it so remarkable. Aside from Marília Pêra, the performers weren't professional actors; they were people living in São Paulo’s inner city, where the story unfolds. It seems as though there wasn't even a script, but rather improvisation by kids who lived those experiences daily. Pixote is a must-see for anyone interested in international cinema. The distinction between art and reality disappears entirely. In fact, years later, Fernando Ramos de Silva, who played Pixote, experienced something similar to what his character and the other children in the film did.
