The film introduces an insurance agent called Forbes, portrayed by Dick Powell, who occasionally utilizes the services of private investigator Mac, played by Raymond Burr, for discreet inquiries. It's Mac who uncovers that Mona, brought to life by Lizabeth Scott, has been receiving numerous gifts from her boyfriend Bill, currently serving time in prison, and he’s tasked with recovering those items. Upon encountering Mona, however, he finds himself drawn to her, initiating an affair despite being contentedly married to Sue, portrayed by Jane Wyatt. This situation causes distress for the PI, who also harbors feelings for Mona, as well as Bill, who is upset that his efforts are seemingly disregarded while he’s imprisoned. As a result of these developments, tensions rise and emotions escalate, suggesting violence may be imminent. The question becomes: when and from whom will it come? It's an effectively made crime story that maintains engagement for ninety minutes through layers of deception, featuring characters who aren't particularly likable. Scott evokes Lauren Bacall but lacks her spark; nevertheless, she performs admirably in a role with considerable depth. Burr is also convincing as the unpleasant investigator, and the plot’s complexity largely holds up until the very end. There, I felt the story lost some momentum; the resolution seemed somewhat underwhelming. Despite this, it stands among the stronger examples of its kind and could give you pause before submitting that routine insurance claim.
