Following the success of Pitch Perfect 1, it seemed those involved started chasing after spectacle, seemingly believing that making the franchise bigger would improve it—ignoring what made the original so appealing: its straightforwardness. The first film felt grounded and didn't take itself too seriously, yet still managed to tell a story with a great cast who portrayed characters that felt somewhat relatable, with believable quirks and relationships, and a group of friends that seemed like they could genuinely exist outside the movie. That was what made it special. Then came two… and then three. It’s hard to imagine things getting worse after including DJ Khaled and Ruby Rose in the cast. It's easily the weakest entry in the series. Pitch Perfect 3 completely lost its way—which is inevitable when you try to make a trilogy about an a cappella group that isn’t even in college anymore, and don't come up with any clever ideas about it. They were trying to shove American military themes and DJ Khaled into the story, and also somehow convince viewers that Chloe is straight? That’s propaganda I’m not buying, as one of my friends pointed out. The kiss between Chloe and Becky remains important in my mind. It wasn't funny. The characters felt like exaggerated stereotypes. It was propagandistic. It was disappointing. There was a pointless action subplot. The competition didn’t feel real; every character frustrated me. I dislike Ruby Rose’s appearance and her hairstyle. The only character who managed to retain any depth was Beca, and it's probably because Anna Kendrick refused to force a romantic storyline on her, prioritizing her grumpy affection for the Bellas—unlike what they did with Chloe... And Lilly... And Emily (although their relationship made sense). Everyone else besides Fat Amy (who, I think, had her character completely ruined by how absurd they made it) was reduced to being like Jessica and Ashley. Even then, they felt obligated to show them even more than in the previous films. At least this one offered about an hour and a half of performances that were slightly better than Pitch Perfect 2, which only had the "Worlds" competition to offer.
