Bill Heck portrays “Gabe,” a man discovering his homosexuality later in life, already having navigated an ex-wife and fatherhood. Simultaneously, "Ernesto" (Marcus DeAnda) grapples with his own complicated situation as he nears the end of a relationship while also dealing with the lingering presence of a former partner who is comatose in a hospital following an accident—a constant reminder of more positive experiences. “Gabe” has had some encounters with men, but they haven’t gone particularly well, so when he meets "Ernesto," does either man have any possibility for a fresh beginning? The story gains some momentum during the final ten minutes or so; however, most of the film unfolds as an aimless and artificial drama that seems determined to pile on misfortune and bleak circumstances to illustrate how unfulfilled both men feel. It's difficult to identify anything special about the performances, nor is there much to appreciate in the photography or dialogue. After roughly an hour, I found myself completely indifferent to what became of either character. The film attempts to explore some of the internal struggles its characters face, but it feels like a superficial exercise. There’s nothing particularly original on display here.
