This remake of *Piranha* feels like an unnecessary endeavor, especially if you’re familiar with the earlier version from 1978. Essentially, it duplicates that film scene by scene; it’s more of a clumsy recreation than a true remake, although there are some peculiar alterations—I won't detail them, but one involves an animal and another concerns a particular item. The movie closely mirrors Joe Dante's original, even using the same lines of dialogue. Some characters have their genders switched, mostly from male to female, which seems arbitrary and inconsequential, while the core group remains consistent. Alexandra Paul and William Katt don’t leave much of an impression. Mila Kunis is probably the most memorable aspect of the cast, as this marks her first acting role. The visual effects for the piranhas are decent, but that's not really a good thing because producer Roger Corman reused them from the original film. It begs the question of why this project even happened. It’s a poorly made movie intended for television; some fresh ideas or at least a more inventive reworking would have significantly improved it. Still, it manages to be superior to *Piranha II: The Spawning*.
