Wuchak on Pink Floyd: Behind the Wall

8/10 · Nov 12, 2018

The documentary, released in 2011 and running for just 80 minutes, devotes a significant portion—roughly 50 minutes—to examining the group’s formative years during the 1960s and specifically the period featuring Syd Barrett, along with what followed directly. During this time, their music evoked comparisons to The Doors alongside later Beatles recordings. Interestingly, the film highlights that The Beatles were working on *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band* at the same studio where Pink Floyd recorded *The Piper at the Gates of Dawn* (1967), and suggests The Beatles drew inspiration from Pink Floyd’s imaginative and expansive psychedelic style. Consequently, only 30 minutes are dedicated to exploring the remainder of their career, including pivotal moments like *Dark Side of the Moon* (1973), *Wish You Were Here* (1975), *Animals* (1977), and *The Wall* (1979)—though *Animals* is strangely left out. Despite this imbalance, the documentary delivers a worthwhile experience, featuring plentiful archival material from the period and conversations with surviving members and associates.
