It’s an acceptable film, though I doubt I’ll revisit it, and I can still suggest it to others. To be clear, while it didn’t entirely appeal to my tastes, I suspect most viewers will find something to appreciate in this movie, largely because of the silly dialogue. Franco is a capable performer, but occasionally he and Seth seem to inject too much of their own personalities into the film, which becomes more noticeable when they share screen time. It often feels like they’ve simply transferred what happens when they spend time together on Fridays onto the screen—particularly whenever the momentum slows down and they start playing off each other's energy. The initial storyline that gets sidelined by the main plot could easily sustain its own film, perhaps as a romantic comedy or drama; an older man legally dating a high school girl presents numerous complex situations with considerable potential. Once it’s interrupted by the “on the run” scenario, I honestly expected it to vanish entirely, as it typically would in other movies, or at least for her to reappear searching for him or needing something from his home and then being taken. The return to that original story feels almost humorous in its idea, but ultimately I just find myself wanting to get back to the central narrative, and they employ this tactic throughout the entire film. It’s possible to accept events happening to the main characters that throw them off course, but when they actively sabotage themselves, it becomes disheartening. You begin to question things you shouldn't be questioning, and not even because of drug use—they openly discuss how bad the marijuana is for them, considering their circumstances. I generally dislike humor centered around drugs or abuse, and everything else feels so over-the-top that it’s difficult to connect with. There are some good jokes scattered throughout, but a significant portion seems like “I wanted to make a movie with my friend while acting foolish,” and as someone who appreciates Kevin Smith's work, I understand that impulse, but it should prepare you for the fact that this isn't a top-quality film, and Kevin Smith writes superior dialogue.
